Tuxedo Style

Although my favourite item of clothing remains the dress there are times when I feel inspired to add a little masculine to my feminine.  Fitted blazers, white collared shirts, cigarette pants…. a modern take on YSL’s ‘le smoking suit’.  For Fall 2011 Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung and Ralph Lauren all showed menswear inspired attire on their catwalks, but so often does boy-meets-girl resurface it’s hard not to embrace this and tell James Bond to move over.

I purchased this white sleeveless top from ASOS a few months back and I’ve paired it with skinny and wide legged trousers as well as voluminous maxi skirts.  I’d hardly call this outfit here androgyny, I’d just call this “fun”.  FYI – I haven’t gone as far as adding a tie or a bow tie into the mix right now, although my friend Mariah of Quite Continental is an excellent education in these matters.

Perhaps style notes for this sort of dressing are best taken from Marlene Dietrich, who said “I am at heart a gentleman”.  She remained equally as enigmatic and glamorous no matter how she chose to get dressed, but I did love her in a suit.

Anyone else borrowing from the boys right now? A show of hands, please?

Wearing: Patent pumps from Dorothy Perkins; Military style coat from Reiss; jean leggings from Gap and white pleated blouse from ASOS.

  4. Simple black and white is always effortlessly chic. I’m obsessed with those jean leggings!!

  5. I had a conversation this morning about teenage boys looking very androgynous in the way they’re styling their hair, the colors they’re wearing, and the way their jeans are fitting.

I love this look!!! I was just looking into some tuxedo pants the other day as a matter of fact! I really want to try the white button up (or maybe some sort of color) with a black bow tie soon as well! Very elegant and the shoes complete the ensemble beautifully! Lovely! 🙂

I don’t neccessarily think of the black pants and white shirt look as masculine, although I suppose that is the way it originated. I always think that women look more feminine when there is a bit more mystery in what they wear. Of course LBDs have their place, but you can never go wrong with a classic black coat and white blouse. You wear this outfit so beautifully- I’m particularly swooning over your shoes!

  14. I went to a really interesting talk at FIT in NYC about the development of women’s clothes over the years. I was amazed at how recently things like trousers for women were accepted in society. Thanks for the shoe love, Cee! x

Oh i love this look on you! There’s something really stylish and chic about dressing up with a bit of masculinity to an outfit. For some reason, i think it looks extra chic and rock-ish on women with short hair styles or the bob hair looks.

p.s. Regarding my previous blog post. Yes, i agree with you, the peter pan collar definitely makes you change your mind after you see the Emilio Pucci RTW Fall 2011 collection. I can see it being your style too, hehehe….the other peter pan collar photos were a bit too girl-ish i suppose 😉
